Do appraisers look in closets?

Closets help explain the layout and use of rooms. Access can also help the appraiser check measurements and understand how finished space connects through the home. Storage is a property feature, and visible damage inside a closet can be relevant to condition.

A water stain, a damaged wall or another visible concern matters for a different reason than a shelf of untidy clothes. An appraisal visit records property characteristics; it is not a judgment about housekeeping.

Make closet doors easy to open and move items that prevent access where practical. Tell the appraiser about locked storage or a space that cannot safely be entered. Ask about the access needed for your particular assignment before the visit.

You do not need to empty every shelf or arrange every item. The useful preparation is allowing the appraiser to see the space and noting repairs or changes that may not be obvious.

The visit also considers room arrangement, size, features and condition elsewhere in the home. The appraiser then researches relevant market evidence. A closet observation alone does not determine the value.
